I designed What Made That Sound? Musical Instruments to give educators, therapists, and families an interactive, zero-prep digital tool to target early auditory discrimination, listening skills, and musical instrument vocabulary without needing to print, laminate, or gather physical instruments. This is part two following on from part 1 of musical instruments. Part 1 can be found here.
Early learners listen to an isolated instrument sound from the rhythmic beat of a drum and tinkling chime of a xylophone to a strumming guitar, bright trumpet, or delicate triangle ping before identifying and selecting the matching instrument from an accessible 8-item array.
This activity connects directly to key targets across my Resource Library, supporting foundational communication development in:
Speech: Auditory awareness, pitch/timbre recognition, and foundational Phonological Awareness (Phase 1 phonics instrument discrimination).
Language: Identifying musical instruments, sound-to-symbol association, and descriptive Semantic Relationships.
Social Communication: Shared attention, sustained listening focus, and joint engagement prompts.
Engineered with low cognitive load and intuitive touch controls, this digital resource runs straight in your web browser across iPads, interactive touchscreens, and classroom laptops. For hands-on extension activities and home programmes, you can also explore complementary resources in my Printables library.
